The APEC Capacity Building Workshop for Energy Efficiency and Conservation Policy supports APEC economies in strengthening their capacity to develop and implement effective energy efficiency and conservation policies. The project is delivered through a series of one-day, in-person workshops, with each workshop focusing on a specific policy theme.

The Phase 2 Workshop, "AI-Enabled Smart Buildings Policies: Advancing Energy Efficiency in APEC's Buildings Sector," was successfully held in Shenzhen, China, on 29th July 2026, in conjunction with the 67th Meeting of the APEC Expert Group on Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EGEEC 67).
The workshop brought together representatives from the host economy, invited experts, and APEC member economies to exchange policy developments, technical insights, practical experiences, and case studies on the application of AI in improving building energy efficiency. Discussions focused on identifying common challenges and policy gaps, sharing evidence of energy efficiency gains from AI-enabled systems, and exploring practical approaches to support policy implementation across APEC economies.
Interactive breakout sessions enabled participants to identify key policies and regulatory gaps and discuss pathways for integrating AI-enabled smart building policies into economy-wide energy efficiency frameworks. The workshop concluded with a plenary reflection session, where participants consolidated key insights, identified priority policy actions, and developed recommendations to help advance AI-enabled energy efficiency policies across the APEC region.
