APERC Participated in the 7th International Sustainable Energy Summit

12 August 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

APERC colleague Yishan Zheng participated as a panellist in Deep Dive Workshop 5, “The Role of Nuclear Power in Balancing Energy Security, Equity, and Sustainability,” at the 7th International Sustainable Energy Summit (ISES), held on 12 August 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

During the session, Yishan presented APERC’s research findings on nuclear power’s potential role in the future energy systems of the APEC region, with a particular focus on Southeast Asia. The presentation highlighted nuclear energy’s potential contribution to strengthening energy security and advancing regional decarbonisation efforts while meeting growing electricity demand.

The panel discussion also addressed developments in the international nuclear project market, the potential of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), and the legal, regulatory, financial, and institutional foundations needed to support nuclear energy development.

The session underscored the importance of considering nuclear power as part of a whole-system energy strategy alongside renewables, storage, and grid development, while recognising the unique circumstances and priorities of each economy.
