APERC participated in the APEC Energy Working Group Capacity Building Workshop on “Natural Gas, LNG and Hydrogen Infrastructure Readiness,” held virtually on 6 August 2026 and hosted by the United States Department of Energy.
The event brought together more than 50 participants from APEC economies, including representatives of energy ministries, regulatory and standards bodies, oil and gas companies, and private-sector technical experts, to discuss how standards and conformity assessment pathways support safe infrastructure deployment, equipment interoperability and cross-border compatibility across natural gas, LNG and hydrogen systems. The workshop also contributed to the development of the APEC Natural Gas and Hydrogen Standards Toolkit and Reference Guide.
APERC Senior Researcher Dr Alexander Ermakov joined the panel discussion on “Natural Gas and LNG Infrastructure Readiness” and delivered a presentation titled “The Future of Natural Gas in APEC”. The presentation highlighted the growing role of natural gas in APEC economies and the projected expansion of LNG imports across the region, particularly in China and Southeast Asia. He also addressed emerging considerations for infrastructure and standards, including the growing importance of life-cycle assessment and methane-emissions intensity in LNG markets, as well as the need for additional guidance and standardisation to support the deployment of floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs).
APERC was also represented by Dr Sih-Ting JHOU and Mr Rodrigo Martinez Picazo, who took part in the discussions.
