At the APERC Workshop

From 6 to 9 September 2026, the Asia Pacific Energy Research Centre (APERC) participated in the 72nd APEC Energy Working Group Meeting (EWG72) and a series of related events in Beijing, China.

Ahead of EWG72, APERC held its workshop on 7 September, with approximately 40 participants. APERC researchers presented progress in preparing the 10th edition of the APEC Energy Demand and Supply Outlook and reported on recent policy cooperative activities covering renewable energy, energy efficiency and conservation, clean and low-carbon hydrogen, and oil and gas security. These included capacity-building workshops in Thailand and China, the 1st APEC Clean and Low-Carbon Hydrogen Policy Convention in Hong Kong, China, the 9th APEC Oil and Gas Security Exercise in Malaysia, and APEC Oil and Gas Security Studies No. 22.

At EWG72 on 8–9 September, APERC Chairman and President Dr. Kazutomo Irie delivered the APERC President’s Report. Senior Vice President Robert Tromop, in his capacity as Chair of the Expert Group on Energy Data and Analysis (EGEDA), presented the EGEDA Chair Report and reported on progress toward the APEC energy intensity reduction and renewable energy doubling goals. Under the agenda item on progress of initiatives, Dr. Irie and Vice President Mitsuhito Takada also reported on two APERC-organised workshops held in Tokyo and Seoul.

APERC executives also contributed to several related events. Mr. Takada joined a roundtable discussion at the APEC Workshop on Power System Resilience Building, hosted by State Grid Corporation of China. Mr. Tromop joined a roundtable at the APEC Workshop on Research and Practical Approaches for New-Type Power Systems Adapted to High Penetration of Variable Renewable Energy in the APEC Region, hosted by China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd. He also introduced shared views at the 1st APEC Clean and Low-Carbon Hydrogen Policy Convention during the United States Department of Energy-hosted event Promoting Trade and Energy Security: Launching the APEC LNG & Hydrogen Standards Toolkit and Reference.

The APERC delegation also attended other meetings, seminars, high-level dialogues, and technical and cultural activities held alongside EWG72 and EMM16.
