TOKYO, Japan, 2 October 2026 — The Energy Statistics and Training Office (ESTO) of the Asia Pacific Energy Research Centre (APERC) organized the 24th APEC Workshop on Energy Statistics from 30 September to 2 October 2026 in Tokyo, Japan. The workshop focused on the challenges faced by APEC member economies in collecting, compiling, and reporting transport energy statistics, particularly in the context of improving energy efficiency and the transition to new transport technologies.
The three-day workshop brought together energy statistics experts and representatives from APEC member economies and international organizations to share experiences and discuss data challenges in the transport sector. Presentations and roundtable discussions covered transport energy consumption, decarbonization and energy efficiency, electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, fuel-cell vehicles, biofuels, hydrogen and synthetic fuels, as well as transport activity data. Economies shared their national approaches and highlighted challenges in collecting reliable and comparable data for emerging transport technologies and for assessing transport energy efficiency.
The workshop also provided an opportunity to discuss possible improvements to transport energy statistics and energy-efficiency indicators, including methodologies for collecting transport activity and energy data and proposed updates to APEC energy statistics questionnaires. The discussions will contribute to the ongoing work of EGEDA in strengthening the quality, comparability, and coverage of transport energy statistics across APEC economies, supporting more effective analysis and evidence-based energy and transport policy development.
